Tallaght stadium wins Airtricity Pitch of the Year

Tallaght Stadium has won the 2010 Airtricity League Pitch of the Year award, following an inspection by the Irish Institute of Sports Surfaces (IISS).

The winner of the award was announced after the IISS visited Tallaght Stadium and Turner's Cross, which was also shortlisted for the award, following nominations by the Airtricity League referees and players, in association with the PFAI.

The award, which is organised by the FAI and IISS, and sponsored by specialist sports turf fertiliser company OSMO, will be presented at half time during the FAI Ford Cup final at Aviva Stadium on November 14th.

IISS Managing Director Donal Kearney said, "The Airtricity League Pitch of the Year Award has been created to highlight the hard work of ground staff, whose dedication and endeavours has often gone unnoticed. We hope that this award provides due recognition and will encourage others to continue to improve the standards of the playing surface. Our thanks to the Osmo Sportsturf company for their support."

Fran Gavin, Director of the Airtricity League added, “The quality of the playing surfaces in the Airtricity League has improved immensely over the last number of seasons and this is a credit to the people in the clubs who now have developed the  expertise in this area through FAI Club Licensing. Shamrock Rover’s home ground at Tallaght Stadium is a great example of the measured improvement and winning this award is a just reward for South Dublin County Council's decision to prioritise the quality of the playing surface.”

Willie Sheils, Senior Executive Officer, Community Services Department of South Dublin County Council said; “South Dublin County Council is delighted to have won the Airtricity League “Pitch of the Year” award. This award is a reflection of the Council’s determination to place the condition of the playing surface at the top of its list of priorities at Tallaght Stadium, but most of all is a tribute to Killian Byrne and his dedicated team at Sean Walsh Park Depot.”
