Hoops battle back to rescue a draw

Shamrock Rovers had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bnei Yehuda in a match they dominated from start to finish.

Despite controlling the match, it seemed that the Hoops’ first European match in Tallaght was destined for defeat until Robert Bayly struck an injury time equaliser.

The Hoops had gone at their Israeli opponents from the start. Their earliest chance was almost a gift from Bnei goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba, who miscontrolled a backpass and almost allowed the ball to cross over the line.

Despite their positive play, the Hoops fell behind on 26 minutes. Eghia Yavruyan was played in over the top and his cross found Omri Afek, who tapped the ball into an empty net.

Rovers never gave up, however, and they continued to press for an equalizer. Their opponents always looked suspect under crosses and it was eventually a cross into the box that allowed the Hoops back into the match.

Substitute Bayly headed the ball goalward only for his effort to rebound off Twigg. However, the midfielder steadied himself and rifled home from eight yards, sending Tallaght wild in celebration.

The draw gives Rovers every chance of progressing to the next round against an Israeli side who were second best for most of this first leg encounter.

Shamrock Rovers: Mannus, Sives, Murray, Price (Dennehy, 64), Stevens, Chambers, Rice, Turner (Bayly, 71), Kavanagh, Twigg, Stewart

Bnei Yehuda: Aiyenugba, Azus, Garrido, Haddad, Edri, Zhairi, Sinisa, Baldout, Menashe (Zaid, 73), Yavruyan (Raly, 58), Biton (Afek, 19)
